Dear friends,
our Semi Transparent Plastic Material Library is now available! A set of 129 high quality Semi Transparent Plastic materials divided into four categories (STP Single Sided, STP SSS, STP Translucent, STP Translucent and Medium) to dress your models. During installation, a new sub folder called "Semi Transparent Plastic" is created under Materials data folder.
A new Material Editor preview scene is also installed under the Material Editor Scenes data folder called "1 mm to 5 mm SSS" for easy material adjustments.
The library can be installed and used within Thea Render context [Copyright (C) - Solid Iris Technologies].
How to install the library
1. Go to our forum page that contains the library download links: http://www.thearender.com/forum/viewtop ... 111&t=7011
2. The above requires that you are a member of the licensed user club (if not, please send us an e-mail with your forum nickname along with your order id or reseller info).
3. Download the library somewhere on your hard disk (please, be patient, since thes libraries are not small!)
4. You can launch Thea Studio and open the downloaded file (on Windows, you can more easily double click on the file from the explorer).
5. You have to agree on the license agreement before going on (which is the same updated licensed agreement as for Thea Render itself).
6. Then click on the check button and the necessary files will be copied to your Materials data folder (you can also change this default location).
7. Congratulations, now you have the library installed!
Important: library installation requires Thea revision 610 or above.

one important note:
this materials render relatively slow if you use many light sources. the best is to use HDRI and if an extra light is needed then add a mesh light that is not too small (something like a soft box used by photographers).
also for Presto the tracing depth has to be high enough ... enable extended tracing depth and use at least 15 (best 25 in case the material is too dark).
also model at real world scale and give your walls thickness like it would be in reality. wall thickness are normal for such plastics between 0.3 mm to 5.00 mm, average is 1 to 2 mm.

Great that it also provides a new material preview scene, well thought off. Perhaps you should add some more info about the sort of materials and when to use them and alter them.
PS Patrick, did you also thought about that tutorial about SSS and the scene with the nefertiti model?

basically the 4 categories are meant to "optimize" render times depending of the look you are after and what kind of translucent material you need. if its dense or more see-through. even a "single sided" pack is available for those situations where you have a simple model in the background that has no wall thickness.

I think you should add this info in the post. People will for sure ask more about it. The info is a bit short and doesnt explain when to use what or how to adjust etc.
They really look great. Learned again something about the setup.

There is a great library of classical statues here:

They are legit and free to use with no restrictions.
Some of them are truly awesome and very well suited for a SSS tutorial. High quality too.
