I have no issues with subscription plans. Works well with most software I use and I pass the cost on to clients.

It does require that you trust the software developer and that is were Altair has fallen flat on their face. I "upgraded" to Thea4SU 2.0 and paid my $90. I still use 1.5 and studio and will do so as I continue to transition to Corona and Vray.

I really enjoy using Thea and appreciate the original team and members of this board.

I'll ride 1.5 off into the sunset...

We have prepared an article on the changes in licensing. As I expected the existing licenses will not be affected. The unfortunate statement was related to completely new licenses. You will continue using the node-locked licenses as long as you wish. We will be updating them when necessary if a machine will get upgraded and a new license file will be required.

Please check the official detailed article with answers to the most frequent questions.

I also made a more personal post in Thea for SketchUp section.

I find the FAQ hard to understand.

In point 3 it says:
"No action is needed from your side. Our team will have your accounts updated with a ‘2 year’ lease license on the portal for you. Since we have quite a few users to be updated, we will complete these by Nov, 15th 2019. The 2-year lease license will be valid till Oct 15, 2021."

In point 4 it says:
"4. Customers using 1.x, 2.x, who did not buy Maintenance.
You can continue with your current standalone paid-up licenses of the versions you are using.
You have the option to purchase a fresh lease from the e-shop as and when you see the need for it. We currently have a promotional offer running till Dec 31, 2019."

In point 6 it says:
"6. I would like to use my existing license indefinitely. Is that possible?"
"As mentioned in the answer to question 4, you can continue to use your current standalone paid-up licenses of the versions you are using."

If Altair automatically downgrade users to a subscription license, does that mean that the current version will stop working oct 15, 2021?
I don't see how that is "indefinitely". Or does it mean users will have to activly stop the permanent license to be downgraded to subscription?

Finally, how do we know if we have a active Maintenance?

Why not do as Vray? Offer a Perpetual license for those who wish and a subscription license for those who wants to pay indefinitely.

Renting software may be good for the developers and perhaps for new customers that dont know if they want to continue using the product longer than the breaking point where renting becomes more expensive but to existing customers I stongly believe it is BAD.

This pretty much sums up how I feel about renting software:

“We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.”

Your current license doesn't get invalidated.
If you bought a maintenance, as the FAQ page states, you will receive a two year upgrade. If you don't update your lease license after 2021, you won't be able to use the latest available version by 2021, but you will still be able to use v2 with your current v2 node locked license.

Getting a lease license (either by maintenance upgrade or buying a new one) does not discard your current v2 license. They are independent.

I too am pretty disappointed by that move.

@Thea, think about this: With this new pricing strategy you are punching at the level of V-Ray.
Communication and product development don't seem to match this ambition right now.

Before the aquisition of Thea by Altair there was a strong bond between the community and the Thea team. During that time Ginannis and co might have been able to pull off this new pricing scheme. But now that connection has degraded dramatically and you might lose quite a few faithful followers.

I really hope you can deliver and prove that going forward Thea is still the best option (for SketchUp users)!
