Entry two: interior architecture. A mix of shapes is used, with the arch and column providing curved surfaces for the material. Both light and shadow are used to show the material in various circumstances, with the direct light from the circular window providing a specular highlight.

Entry three: product design. A mechanical object with an organic shape, the main body has continuously changing curvature, while the logo inset and base are spherical and cylindrical, respectively. The nose section has a stepped core for judging transparent and SSS materials.

That's it for now. I might make more entries, but haven't decided yet.

This is my try.
My material preview is focusing on visualisation of materials intended for exterior renders.
Model consist of sphere and cube surrounded in half dome. Scene is lit by sun and sky environment.
The person is there to represent scale and to cast shadow on the material preview.

If anybody has any idea how to improve my preview scene please go ahead.
Feel free to improve upon it and submit it as your entry.
I would like to see to win material preview with parameters like:
- human for scale
- lit by sun and sky environment

Hi everybody, I´d like to join this contest, I like this challenge.
I still don t have any license for Thea render, i use the demo at home because doing rendering for me is a game. I work also in a company in which we design interiors for shops and we would like to have
Thea render, and my question is if I can enjoy this contest with the name of the company, so if I will win something, I will get the license for the company, not for me. Is it possible to do it this way? Thank you.

Hi there everyone.

Here´s my contribution to the Thea Advanced Material Simulation Scene.

Its rather a standard material ball. But it has some things that I found really practial when previewing materials:

Rundown of the features:

Checker board inner sphere.
Increasing material thickness towards the back of the sphere that starts out really shallow.
This lets you judge the translucence / scattering / absorption of a material.

A light emitting side.
Gives you a better representation of how materials will look close to a light source / back-lit.

Material ball not completely encloses the inner sphere:
So you can compare what the checker board inner sphere looks like without the surrounding materials. Those edges are also good to see caustics.

Foot piece has convex and concave edges:
Those are good mostly to check for AO / DIRT (if those will find its way to Thea)

The material preview material bearing parts are fully UV unwrapped.
To give est results if material utilizing a texture are tested.

Simple Surrounding scene:
The simplicity of the surrounding scene only consistent of two area lights gives you a clear view of your material.

I have changed my model a bit. It still contains concave and convex buttom part with extra details. also stepped top part is now continuing depth loss. Here are some more material tests.
