Well I could rework the type to match the UV map, I was just hoping to be able to use the map as is.

I think it will be worth the effort and it should be pretty straightforward.

It might be worth checking out this camera render by Sandros (using Modo) - he might give you some pointers.

I think DonPedro was onto the right answer. You copy the geometry that you want the text on then move that geometry the tiniest bit forward possible. Use the text as a clipping map to only have the text. Now change the rest of the material properties to get the text any color paint and roughness wanted. This way it should be just like paint is put on a real object.

Actually it is a separate piece of geometry. Looking at your screen shot it dawns on me that cubic may work since the geometry is nearly flat. I'll have to try that.
