I saw these Skog Lamps by Caroline Olsson (Magnor Glassverk) last weekend and couldn't resist modelling and rendering them.

I had a lot of trouble with the glass material and couldn't quite match the real thing, but I think it's a pretty good effort until I can think of a better way of creating the results I want.

Both renders were done using TR2 and sampling set to High. As usual modelling was done using Sketchup and post-pro with Photoshop. There's minimal post-pro work on the first image (just colour, exposure and tone adjustments). For the second image I wasn't entirely happy with the radial glare effect inside Thea so I created a composite using a radial glare Thea image, 8 blade glare Thea image and blurred shape overlays.

I'd say they are really close to the real thing...! Great work! I'd personally do the second one with a darker background so that the lights show better, but thats just me.

Given how demanding this kind of glass material is I was going to use the scene to experiment with Biased render settings. When I get around to doing that I'll try out a darker background with the illuminated version.

I might also add some roughness and subtle surface scratches to the glass.

Looking fantastic.
Where did you get the light bulb model or is it yours?

I started out with this bulb from the 3D Warehouse and subdivided it with Artisan to make it higher poly.

Looks great, i think the thickness of your glass isn't right.
On the real ones you can see the edge of the glass is quite thin, were as your ones doesn't show it.

Yes, you are right Javadevil. When I modelled the shades the glass always turned out too thin or too thick. It's one of those situations where I would need to handle the object (or something similar) in order to get the modelling right.

Since posting my images I've noticed quite a few problems

Edit: What's really annoying is the fact that I'm really familiar with the manufacturing process and despite that knowledge I couldn't get things quite right. There's always next time :D
