I'm not a Sketchup user, but was still surprised to see this:

http://www.slashgear.com/google-sells-sketchup-3d-to-trimble-navigation-26224919/

They promise to keep the free version... We'll see how long that lasts!

I do not see that happening, unless the new owner decides to gut SU and redo it from scratch, I doubt it.

Well lets hope that Trimble surveying, mapping and marine navigation equipment requires lots or RAM and forces them to do it.

I wouldn't think it would be such a huge job to do, since its such a small application, its not like making 3dsmax or photoshop 64bit ready, its a modelling app.

cheers

I believe it's all contingent on the inferencing engine, if they can somehow get it to work with 64 bit they can also get it to handle more poly's and while we are at it why not include UV tools and nurb modelling.

What's a Trimble? Weren't they a big hit on Star Trek? :D

Why did Google abandon us?

I really don't like what this might mean for the future of SU :( :?

When Microsoft bought Truespace there was such high hopes and all they did was make it free then after a year shut the community down, Lightworks pulled the license, Vray pulled out their plugin, the version kicking about only has the realtime renderer.
BUT the the users stick by it regardless and build on what they have so Truespace 7,61 is still alive and kicking 3 years on and plugins and some bug fixes are possible, if SU was closed tomorrow there's still no reason to abandon the ship ;)

Sounds like the core SU developement team does move with the acquisition. Actually, this could be a oppurtunity for SU to develope further. Unfortunate to say, I always had a feeling that google had very little interest to develope SU (and now that is prooven by selling it).

Whatever happens, I think it can overall rather be better than worse. Have been waiting couple of years some serious SU changes, haven't seen nothing much. At least now we have opportunity.
Of course you never know certain before you see it. And you never know what you have to pay for this. Good news for some and bad news for others! World is always changing anyway. Think positive.
